Outdated Method
This guide explains how to connect Schoology to GMetrix using Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.1.
LTI 1.1 is an older connection standard with known security limits. Do not use this method if your Schoology instance supports LTI Advantage (LTI 1.3). Use the Schoology LTI 1.3 setup guide instead.

Check which standard you're using
Your Schoology instance supports LTI 1.3 if you see "LTI Advantage" or are asked for any of the following:

• Client ID
• Registration URL
• OIDC URL

Even if your version of Schoology supports both versions of LTI, we recommend LTI Advantage (LTI 1.3). It's easier to manage and more secure.

Use LTI 1.1 to open GMetrix from Schoology when LTI 1.3 is unavailable. A system administrator can configure GMetrix once as a reusable External Tool Provider. Instructors can then add a separate External Tool material for each GMetrix Course or Practice Exam.

Contact GMetrix Support before continuing with a self-hosted, district-wide, multi-school, multi-organization, or other complex implementation.

Before You Begin

Keep Schoology and the GMetrix Administrator Portal open in separate browser tabs while you follow this guide. Values shown in GMetrix take priority over examples in this guide.

  • Make sure you have access to the GMetrix Administrator Portal.

  • Make sure you have Schoology administrator permission to configure external apps for the intended account.

  • Do not share the Consumer Key or Shared Secret in email, screenshots, or course content.

  • Configure the provider: Complete Part 1 when GMetrix is not available as an External Tool Provider.
  • Add a resource: Skip to Part 2 when the provider exists but the required Course or Practice Exam is not in the course.
  • Test an existing material: Skip to Part 3 when the resource material already exists.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

A Schoology system administrator completes this part once at the district level when possible. If the district does not configure GMetrix, a course administrator can add the provider to one course.

  1. From the header, select Tools.
  2. Select School Management.
  3. Select Integration.
  4. Select External Tools.
  5. Confirm that GMetrix is not already listed as an External Tool Provider.
  6. Select Add External Tool Provider.
  7. Enter GMetrix in Tool Name.

In GMetrix: Copy the Connection Values

  1. In the GMetrix Administrator Portal, select Integrations from the sidebar.

  2. Locate the LTI 1.1 section.

  3. Switching between GMetrix and Schoology, copy and paste the GMetrix LTI 1.1 credentials into their corresponding Schoology fields:

    • Consumer Key

    • Shared Secret

In Schoology: Finish the Registration

After pasting the credentials in their respective fields:

  1. Select the privacy value listed in GMetrix from the Privacy list.

  2. Select Manual from the Configuration Type list.

  3. Select URL from the Match By list.

  4. Switch back to GMetrix and copy the Launch URL.

  5. In Schoology, paste the complete GMetrix Launch URL into Domain/URL.

  6. Leave Custom Parameters blank.

  7. Select Submit.

Course-level fallback

If GMetrix is not installed at the district level, open the course. Select Course Options, select External Tool Providers from the list, and then select Add External Tool Provider. Use the same provider values.

Keep resource parameters out of the provider

Do not add accesscode or gmxresourcekey to the reusable provider. Add them to the material for the specific resource.

Complete this part once for each GMetrix Course or Practice Exam. Do not configure the provider again.

  1. In the GMetrix Administrator Portal, select Integrations from the sidebar.

  2. Locate the Link a Specific Resource section.

  3. Enter the Resource Key (gmxresourcekey) for the Course or Practice Exam.

    • Use the Look up button to find a specific resource key.

  4. Enter the Access Code for the intended Classroom or group.

    • Use the Look up button to find a specific Classroom or group's code.

  5. After the custom parameters appear, select Copy All Parameters.

In Schology

  1. Open the intended course.

  2. Select Add Materials.

  3. Select Add File/Link/External Tool.

  4. Select External Tool.

  5. Select GMetrix from the Tool Provider list.

  6. Enter a title that identifies the GMetrix resource.

  7. Confirm that the GMetrix Launch URL appears.

  8. Paste the GMetrix accesscode and gmxresourcekey lines (Custom Parameters) into Custom Parameters exactly as provided.

  9. Select Enable Grading when the material should receive a Practice Exam score.

  10. Configure the grading settings when grading is enabled.

  11. Select Add.

Schoology grading behavior
Schoology can place an external tool in the gradebook, but it does not automatically create submission notifications, grading reminders, or overdue notifications for LTI materials.

Part 3: Confirm the Resource

  1. Open the saved GMetrix material.

  2. Confirm that GMetrix opens without another sign-in prompt.

  3. Confirm that the intended Course or Practice Exam opens.

  4. Test the material with an appropriate learner account or preview method.

Single sign-on (SSO)

The LTI connection signs learners in when they open GMetrix from Schoology.

Grade Passback

Supported Practice Exam scores can return to Schoology when the LMS item is configured for grading.

Resource management

Reuse the provider or app that is already configured. Add another resource-level link, activity, material, or app only when you need a different GMetrix resource.

Skills Management System (SMS)

Learners must install the desktop application for in-app tests. The macOS version is called SMSe. AutoCAD and Microsoft Office tests require SMS for Windows.
