You can integrate GMetrix with Canvas using Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.1. Once configured, students can access GMetrix content directly within Canvas, and scores will automatically sync between both platforms.

Notes and Compatibility

  • You must have access to both Canvas and the GMetrix Administrator Portal.
  • Your Canvas account must support manual configuration of external tools.
  • For in-app tests, students must download the Skills Management System (SMS).
    • Note: Certain exams only support SMS for Windows.
    • AutoCAD and Microsoft Office exams are not available on macOS (SMSe).

Part 1: Gather Integration Details from GMetrix

Before you can link GMetrix and Canvas you'll need to gather details from the GMetrix Administrator Portal. Consider copying this information into a document for later use.

Step 1: Resource Links

Use Resource Links to sync a specific Course or Practice Test without deep linking.

To generate the required parameters:

  1. Sign in to the Administrator Portal at manage.gmetrix.net.
  2. From the sidebar, select Integrations.
  3. Scroll to the Link a specific resource section.
  4. Enter the Resource Link and Access Code using the text fields.
    • If you don't know your link or code, you can search for them using the Look Up buttons next to each field.
  5. After entering your Resource Link and Access Code, your Custom Parameters will appear below.
  6. Select Copy All Parameters, and paste the text in the Custom Fields section in Canvas (as detailed in step 2).

Step 2: Get Your LTI Credentials

LTI credentials are unique to each institution or testing center. For example, each school in a district will have its own credentials. Make sure you have the correct credentials before integrating the platforms.

  1. From the sidebar, select Dashboard.
  2. Scroll to Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) and select Resources Key Lookup.
  3. Choose Request LTI Key and Secret.
  4. Copy your institution’s credentials:
    • Key: The consumer key used for authentication.
    • Secret: The shared secret for secure communication.
  5. Collect the resource keys needed for each Course or Practice Exam:
    • Course Keys: Go to the Course Keys tab. Expand a category to see Programs and copy the key.
    • Test Keys: Go to the Test Keys tab. Expand a Program to find its Practice Exams and keys.

Part 2: Set Up the Integration in Canvas

After collecting the required information from GMetrix, you can complete the integration steps in Canvas.

Step 1: Add GMetrix as an App

  1. Sign in to Canvas and open a course.
  2. In the Course Navigation menu, choose Settings.
  3. Open the Apps tab and select View App Configurations.
  4. Choose Add App.
  5. Set Configuration Type to Manual Entry and enter the following:
    • Name: A unique app name (e.g., Photoshop Training 1).
    • Consumer Key: The key from the Administrator Portal.
    • Shared Secret: The secret from the Administrator Portal.
    • Launch URL: https://www.gmetrix.net/lti
    • Privacy: Name Only.
    • Custom Fields:
      accesscode=your_classroom_code
      gmxresourcekey=your_resource_key
      • Replace your_classroom_code with your Classroom Code, and your_resource_key with the resource key.
  6. Select Submit.
  7. Repeat this process for each GMetrix resource you want to connect.

Step 2: Add GMetrix Content to a Canvas Module

You'll need to add and configure an Assignment in Canvas to enable grade passback (syncing).

  1. In the Course Navigation menu, choose Modules.
    • To create a new module (optional): select Add Module.
  2. Select the Add button (+) in the upper-right corner of the desired module.
  3. Choose Assignment from the dropdown menu, then select [ Create Assignment ] from the list below.
  4. Enter a name for the assignment and select Add Item.
  5. Open the assignment from the module list.
  6. Select Edit and configure the following:
    • Display Grade as: Choose Points or Percentage.
    • Submission Type: Choose External Tool.
    • External Tool Options: Next to the URL field, select Find, choose a tool from the list, then choose Select.
    • Load This Tool in a New Tab: Keep checked to ensure the Course or Practice Exam loads in its own tab.
  7. Select Save & Publish.
  8. Repeat for each Course or Practice Exam.

Testing and Final Reminders

  • Modules must be published for students to access them.
  • To test the integration:
    1. Select Student View from the upper right of the Canvas course.
    2. Open the assignment and select the Load in a New Window button.
    3. If successful, the GMetrix Student Portal will launch in a new window or tab, and the Course or Practice Exam will appear.
  • When a student completes a Practice Exam, the score syncs to Canvas based on the assignment settings.
